New! Take the train north of the Arctic Circle and experience the northern lights

In late November 2026, Snälltåget will operate a unique overnight train journey taking you north of the Arctic Circle. The train runs all the way from Malmö via Stockholm to Narvik, with stops including Abisko and Björkliden. Travel comfortably north through Sweden and wake up in the mountain landscape, close to some of Scandinavia’s best areas for experiencing the aurora borealis – the northern lights.

The overnight train departs from Malmö on Monday 23 November 2026 and runs via Stockholm to Narvik, with stops including Kiruna, Abisko and Björkliden. The return journey departs from Narvik on Friday 27 November 2026.

The route between Malmö and Narvik is an impressive 2,156 kilometres long – a true long-distance journey through Sweden, from Skåne to the mountain landscapes north of the Arctic Circle. At the destination, you can stay for a few days and combine your visit with accommodation, northern lights viewing and other activities in the mountain environment.

Food and drink on board

On the journey, Snälltåget’s popular dining car, Krogen, is available on board. Here you can sit down in a relaxed setting and enjoy a hot meal while the train travels north through Sweden.

To guarantee a table, we recommend booking a table and pre-ordering your meal when purchasing your ticket. You can also add both table reservations and meals later via My journey.

Read more about food and drinks on board in Krogen.

Krogen also features a self-service counter – ideal if you would like to buy something quickly and take it back to your seat. Coffee, tea, water, soft drinks, sandwiches, pastries and snacks are available.

Accommodation in Abisko, Björkliden and Kiruna

For those hoping to experience the Northern Lights, we recommend staying in Abisko, which is well known for its excellent conditions for aurora viewing. One popular option is STF Abisko Turiststation (opens in new tab), located close to both nature and Abisko National Park.

There are also several accommodation options in Björkliden and Kiruna for travellers who would like to combine their trip with more experiences in the area.

Frequently asked questions before your journey

Here you will find practical information about travelling on the overnight train.

How do I book the trip?

Book your trip via our online booking system, which you can find at the top of the page or on the homepage.

The outbound journey departs on 23 November and the return journey on 27 November.

If you book a return trip and choose a private compartment, you receive a 20% discount.

How does travelling on the overnight train work?

On board, you can choose between different comfort options depending on how you would like to travel.

Private Compartment

With a private compartment, you have the compartment to yourself or your travel party (up to six people). The compartment is in seating mode when boarding and is converted into sleeping mode for the night. Bed linen is provided in the compartment, and you make up the beds yourself.

A private compartment is ideal for those who prefer to travel more privately and enjoy a little more peace and personal space during the journey – whether travelling alone, as a couple, with family or with friends.

Berth in a shared compartment

You share the compartment with other passengers (up to six people per compartment). The compartment is in seating mode when boarding and is converted into sleeping mode when it is time to sleep. In sleeping mode, there are three berths on each side. The upper berths are accessed by ladder. Pillow, pillowcase, sheet and duvet are provided in the compartment.

A berth in a shared compartment is suitable for travellers looking for a lower-priced option and who do not mind sharing a compartment with other passengers.

Is Interrail valid on the train?

Yes, Interrail is valid on board, but a reservation is required. Interrail travellers can book a private compartment on the night train from SEK 2,499 per compartment.

Read more about booking Interrail reservations.

Is there a restaurant on board?

Yes, the night train has the restaurant carriage Krogen on board. Here you can enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner while the scenery passes by outside the window. We serve special menus for the journey, with different dishes on the outbound and return journeys as well as a separate lunch menu.

Lunch costs SEK 199 and dinner SEK 299. Vegan options are available for both lunch and dinner. Meals are served in the restaurant car and cannot be taken back to your seat or compartment. As Krogen is popular, we recommend booking your table and meals in advance when purchasing your ticket, or later via My Journey.

You can also pre-book breakfast in Krogen, or a breakfast bag to bring to your compartment. Breakfast costs SEK 149, and vegan, gluten-free and lactose-free options are available when pre-booking.

How much luggage can I bring?

You may bring two pieces of hand luggage (55 × 45 × 25 cm). If you book a Private compartment, you may bring additional luggage into the compartment.

To make your journey smoother, we recommend packing in smaller, soft bags rather than one large hard suitcase. Smaller bags are easier to carry on board and fit on the luggage racks or between seats. Larger suitcases can be more difficult to handle and may block aisles or emergency exits.

The train has a luggage van where you can check in larger items, such as suitcases, prams or outdoor equipment. The cost for checked luggage is SEK 149 per item and per journey.

You can pre-book luggage check-in when purchasing your ticket or later via My Journey.

If you are travelling in a Seat or Berth in a shared compartment, larger luggage must be checked into the luggage van.

What are the rules for changes and cancellations?

A berth in a shared compartment can be rebooked up to 24 hours before departure. For a private compartment on the night train, rebooking must be made no later than 7 days before departure. Refundable tickets are available as an optional add-on.
